December 3

Today we showed our appreciation for our trash guy.  He does a great job and always waves to the boys as they watch his big garbage claw come down and lift our garbage can high in the air.  They love it.  And we’ve yet to hear him complain about our topless, broke garbage can which we completely over stuff almost every week because it doesn’t have a top and therefore you can shove all kinds of stuff in there and let it hang out the top.  At first we were ticked the city gave us a topless can, but then we quickly realized it had its benefits…like over stuffing and our Raccoon friend.  But I digress.

Sometimes things don’t go as planned and that’s when you just have to roll with it.  Like this morning…for example.  Josh took Harper to school and the boys road along with him.  I was busy getting things going at our house with Amon and that’s when I heard the trash truck driving past.  And that is also when I noticed his treat sitting on our counter.  I grabbed my camera and snapped a picture as he was picking up our neighbors trash.  You have to capture this kind of stuff…you know, for the record.

I was bummed.  I mean it is only day 3 of this whole kindness advent.  The boys came back and were equally as bummed.  They love the trash guy and his stellar claw.  We talked it over and decided we could maybe catch him on his way down the other side of the street.  And the stake out began.  They were committed.  Like when they went to get dressed I had to take over their post.

Time passed and we were getting close to having to leave for MDO, so we decided to drive around and look for him.  This is what normal people do, correct?  While we were driving Huddy started an intense discussion about who was more important…our trash guy or the mail man?!?!  It was deep.  And intense.  It was finally determined they are equally important because if they neither came our house would be covered in trash…like Amon’s dirty diapers…and smell bad and we would never get fun packages in the mail.  Like I said, deep and intense.

We ended up back at our house without a seeing our trash guy.  We sat in our driveway and then it hit me.  He had yet to pick up the trash on the other side of the street so we snaked our neighbors trashcan.

Dear Neighbor Zandrea,

If you see this, well, we used your trash can.  Hope you don’t mind or feel too used.  Your trash can is way classier than our topless trash can and it was nice not having to duct tape the bag of cookies and Starbucks card to ours.  Thanks for understanding.

Love,

The Kelleys & our topless trash can which is completely unsuitable for day 3 of our kindness advent

I don’t want to brag or anything, but I’d like to think we were pretty darn resourceful this morning.  I suppose that is bragging.  Oh well, day 3 is in the bag.

Tomorrow we are shopping for a family for Christmas.  This is one of my most favorites.

In other completely unrelated news, Amon gets that dang red cast off today.  To say I am excited would be completely absurd.  We are elated.  It was suppose to come off next week, but because of double booked doctor’s appointments and all other days next week being booked, we got an early arm release.  Can I get a what, what?!?!?!

Dear Dang Red Cast,

So long sucka!

Love,

Amon & his parents

Happy, happy Tuesday!

December 1 & 2

Well here we go ladies and gents, December has begun.  We started our Christmas kindness advent yesterday and rocked it out this morning as well.  Recently someone told me they wanted to do a kindness advent, but that last year it became more of a chore versus something which helps keep your heart focussed on Christ’s love.  I really thought about that and honestly, I totally get it.  With four kids and the busiest time of the year, I can totally look back and see the days when I had viewed it as a chore.  This year I’m already handing out the grace card to myself to ensure this doesn’t happen with our family this year.  I want our kids to keep their excitement about spreading love and kindness.  I don’t want them to lose sight of what this time of year is really about.  Who needs me throwing extra stress and pride into the mix.  So I’m doing some things a little different this year…we’re taking things a little more easy and relaxed.

Like yesterday we took polaroid pictures of families and friends in Target while we shopped.  We spent Thanksgiving in Florida and had just gotten back.  Josh had to get some things done and Huddy and Sol wanted to spend time with him, so just Harper, Amon and myself went to Target.  The boys knew and understood what we were doing and I wanted them to be apart of the kindness, but time with their dad was just fine too.  So just three of us rocked it out yesterday and it was just as meaningful.

I was so proud of Harper.  I watched as she walked up to total strangers, told them we were spreading kindness for Christmas this year and asked if she could take their pictures.  Then she would stand back, “say cheeeeeese”, snap their pics and then hand over the picture and wish them a Merry Christmas.  I was the creepy lady standing behind her crying.  Like a dork.  Two ladies even gave her $5 and asked her to pay it forward.  She wants to give the $5 to Ms Betty at the post office since she works so hard for us and is always kind.  Gosh!

Today we showed a little appreciation to the custodians who work so hard at Harper’s school.  Normally I would want to make something homemade, but like I said, we just got back from Florida, so we went with break and bake cookies.  Harper, Huddy and Sol can line a cookie sheet with break and bake dough like nobody’s business and they still understood what those cookies were about…homemade or not.

Kindness doesn’t have to be fancy or complicated or all dolled up…it can be simple and easy and small.  Kindness in whatever form or shape can change someone’s day and show them God’s love.  I want to encourage you this December to soak up the days…to remember others and Jesus and to show love and kindness…and to show yourself some grace…loving God and others in the best way you know how…in the ways that work for your family this season.

Tomorrow we are thanking our trash guy.  He works hard and we appreciate what he does.  He deserves some break and bake cookies too.

Let December commence.  It’s going to be grand, I just know it.

Happy Monday.

Shopping With Purpose This Christmas

Thanksgiving has come and gone and I didn’t get one picture.  Not one.  I wish I could say it was because I was soaking up the grateful tone of the day and not the reality of dealing with a kid crying over having to taste sweet potato and squash casserole.  Our rule…you have to taste it.  You don’t know if you like it or not unless you taste it.  And oh the drama.  But we survived.  And it was a good day.  I may have eaten an ungodly amount of Gooey Butter Cake, but my Aunt Linda really does make the best.  It’s perfection.  And she freezes it…we ate it straight from the freezer and WOW!  Amazing!  And I did get to spend the day with some of my most favorite people.

We did a little Thanksgiving shopping at Target last night.  I use to go Black Friday shopping every year.  I had strict rules I followed to ensure the shopping experience was adrenaline pumped and savings was, well, saved.  You know, the biggest bang for your buck.  I enjoy the thrill of running down aisles and fighting with little old ladies.  Technically I’ve never fought with an old lady.  Last night we went well after Target had opened and I quickly remembered my Rule #3 Never browse.  Get in and out.  We ended up waiting in the world’s longest check out line for a grand total of $45.74.  It was redonk, yet fun.  And I discovered the world’s most beautiful crock pot.  Be amazed.

The last two years I’ve done most of my shopping online except for a few things here and there.  Every year I try more and more to shop with purpose.  I’ll never kick my Target or craft store habit…Joanns, Michaels, Hobby Lobby…I just can’t, but I am trying to be more purposeful with most of my shopping.  So here are some of the places I am loving on this year.

Krochet Kids: Empowering people to rise about poverty.  Hoodies, hats, bags, iPad/iPad mini covers, Christmas stockings and more.

TOMS: One for One shoe motto…buy a pair and they donate a pair.  They’re legit…I’ve seen the proof and their shoes are rad on the cute, comfortable and fashionable scale.

Noonday Collection:  My fave.  They use fashion and design to create economic opportunity for the vulnerable.  Jewelry, Home & Gifts and Accessories.  Seriously a one stop shop for incredible women in your life.  I could shop for days on this site.

And even better my friend Brea is having a Noonday Trunkshow this Thursday night from 6-8.  Drinks and snacks provided.  Check out the invite HERE and all you locals come shop till you drop.

Sevenly:  Supports a different world changing cause each week.  Items for men, woman, kiddos and your pets.  One of my favorite sites.  Amazing clothes and accessories plus the cutest kids stuff.  All for amazing causes.

Timbali Crafts:  Well you know how I feel about them already.  It’s love.  And they have a new website which makes ordering much easier and you can see all the available patterns now.  I was blown away.  So many things I want to order.  And the Christmas ornaments…don’t even get me started.  Supports and empowers hard working women in Swaziland, Africa.  All sorts of bags, iPad & Kindle padded covers now online, ornaments, home decor, aprons, headbands and ties.

FashionABLE:  Creating sustainable business in Africa.  Scarves and leather clutch, iPad sleeve and wallets.

Mocha Club:  I need Africa collaboration with FashionABLE.  Amazing products.  Shirts, scarves, prints, mugs, coffee, jewelry.

So those are a few of my favorites.  I know there are plenty of other great companies out there who are changing the world.  I’d love to hear about your favorites.  Share and help us all shop with purpose this Christmas.

Happy Friday!

We Are Those People

Yeah, so we are totally the people who are decked out in Christmasness before Thanksgiving.  I feel a little shame about it all, but not enough to not tell you guys about it.  I think mainly in part because this is definitely a Josh Kelley thing and not me.  Who knew he’d be the “let’s put up Christmas decorations the day after Halloween” type of guy.  But alas, he is and I kind of love it.

In fact we’re closing in on the two week mark for already being Christmas ready…tree, stockings and all.  I wasn’t feeling well one Saturday and was laid up in bed most of the day.  When I finally emerged from our bedroom the tree was up and Christmas was in full swing.  The kids had even already watched Elf.  It made me smile…smilings my favorite.

Before we had kids and even a whole two years after Harper came along I held on to my tree decorated just the way I wanted.  All glass balls Josh and I had painted our first year of marriage plus a few glittery ones and robin’s egg blue snowflakes to seal the deal.  Then I realized I liked the hodge podge tree so much better.  I like all the ornaments the kids made and all the special ornaments mom and other people have given us.  So now our tree is an over stuffed explosion of color and memories and handmade lovelies.  It’s just the perfect tree for us.

I still love a good Thanksgiving.  I still like gratefulness and we’re still pushing on with our thankful leaves.  It’s just that, tomorrow while giving thanks, we’ll probably be listening to Christmas music in the background and making Christmas lists.

So bring on the turkey and stuffing, but let’s wash it down with egg nog and candy canes.  Christmas, the Kelleys are ready for you.

Happy WednesdaY.

2013 Kindness Advent

So wow, Thanksgiving is this week and then December starts Sunday…this is craziness.  The year is already closing out.  We have a busy week so we got everything ready for our kindness advent this weekend which will start Sunday…December 1…25 acts of kindness leading up to Christmas.  You can read about it HERE along with lots of ideas.

I’ve had several emails and messages about what things we will be doing for this year.  So here’s what the Kelley family has planned for December:  Taking polaroids of shoppers, flowers to Ms. Sherry Harper’s school custodian, treat for our garbage man, buying Christmas for a family, overpay for the Contributor, buy & pump someone’s gas, Redbox rental bucket, paint rocks & leave them on the playground, donuts for school staff, decorate someone’s mailbox, gift card for a single mom, sticky notes on mirrors in a public restroom, treat for our mailman, handout kids books in a store, share a dinner, cookies to our pediatricians office, buy someone’s lunch in the drive thru, load bubble gum machines with quarters, buy school supplies for Harper’s classroom, share Sonic happy hour, babysit for a couple, leave gift cards in shopping carts, give away a recipe with all the needed groceries, bring in neighbors trashcans and give a surprise for a gas station worker.

We’re excited to get busy.  We’re excited to be really intentional with kindness this Christmas season.  We added some new things we’ve never done, but also left several of our favorites.  The kids are ready and already asking when we get to start.

Tell me what you guys are up to for December?  Advent…no or yes?  If yes, what kind do you do…treats, verses, activities, etc.  I’d love to hear your ideas.

Happy Monday.

Oh and almost forgot, the Timbali Crafts Giveaway ends tonight at midnight.  CLICK HERE to see how to enter to win all these goodies.

Christmas Favorites

Here we sit in the aftermath of Christmas.  We’ve spent the last two days just home…reading books, playing, crafting and assembling lego kits.  I like the lazy slow days after Christmas.

When looking back it was quite a delightful holiday, even though all holidays are very different now and have a sting to them.  It being Amon’s first Christmas made it extra, extra special…especially with the year he’s had.

I sat back most of the holiday and just thought about how grateful I was to be his mom…to be all the wee Kelleys’ mom and to do this crazy little life with Josh Kelley.  And most of all…incredibly thankful for the gift of Jesus.  I am always amazed at the gift of Jesus…a Savior to the world with crazy redemption and grace and love just for our crappy, undeserving selves.  God’s ginormous love for us truly floors me.  I want to try to love like that.

This was my most favorite picture of Christmas because A) Josh Kelley’s expression, B) Huddy’s blurry face, C) Amon looks like a cartoon character and D) Sol looks like he just lost his best friend.  My boys…keeping it real.  Harper is my sanity.

Our Christmas was pretty simple.  Nothing fancy and very laid back…which I adored.  And this year with 4 out of 6 of us coming down with the flu, it made us slow down a lot…which I really enjoyed…minus the sick part.

I loved their grateful hearts and their joy and anticipation and excitement.  It was our best Christmas yet.  And at the end of Christmas night we sat down and did our annual timer family photo in front of our tree.

Happy

Silly

Mad

Mad may be my favorite.

And now we’re gearing up for the New Year.  Josh and I have already started talking about our 2013 goals.  I’m excited for a new year.  A new start.  New goals and the wonder & excitement of change.  It always feels like anything is possible with a new year.  So have you started thinking about your goals?  Any crazy ones?  Any that seem impossible, but you think, “Just maybe this year.”  I feel that way about a lot of ours too.  Excited to see what this next year will hold.

Happy Thursday.

Merry Christmas!

“And the darker the night got, the brighter the star would shine.”

Thankful for a baby who came to save the world.  Merry Christmas from our family to yours.

December 24

We still have some gnarly coughs, but everyone is definitely on the up and up around the Kelley house.  We even ventured out last night and drove around to look at Christmas lights.  The wee Kelleys adored it and we kept our germs to ourselves in our car.  It was a win win.

Today we made germ filled kid decorated cookies.  I will only eat one of Harper’s…I wouldn’t touch one of the boys decorated cookies with a 10ft. pole.  They lick and touch and lick some more and add more sprinkles, all the while grossing Josh and me out.  Harper is careful and cleans her hands and doesn’t lick all over her fingers while she works.  I like her.

All our presents are wrapped and under the tree.  I know the kids are excited and I’m pretty darn excited too.  Anticipation and Joy.

Huddy brought me the sweetest picture all wrapped up in wrapping paper.  He said it was my Christmas gift.  I opened it up and just cried big drippy tears.  Tis’ the season.

And tonight before bed we read the Christmas story from the kids’ Jesus Storybook Bible.  I love this little Bible.

“This baby would be like that bright star shining in the sky that night.  A Light to light up the whole world.  Chasing away darkness.  Helping people to see.  And the darker the night got, the brighter the star would shine.”

Oh how thankful I am that Jesus came.  The anticipation and joy.  The weary world rejoices.

  Happy Christmas Eve.
