B/C I Heart Halloween

A random Thursday post which includes some Halloween pictures because I do really love Halloween.  And since Halloween is gone every store is now full on Christmas.  Harper went on a small rant in Target yesterday about how she doesn’t like people skipping over Thanksgiving.  I kind of agree.  Although I live with Josh Kelley who wants to put up our Christmas tree right now.  So I’m still living in last Friday.

We tried doing some trick-or-treating in our neighborhood, but after a few houses and some epic Halloween fails we decided to ditch our own and head over to hang with some friends.  We’re lucky in the fact we have friends who don’t mind us crashing their festivities with 4 children.

My favorite moment of the night was when Hudson hopped in the car and said, “I can’t wait to eat this chocolate Santa.”  Whaaaattt????  A chocolate Santa.  Harper then replied with, “Yeah, I got a Reeces shaped like a Christmas tree.”  So yeah, one house gave out last years Christmas candy.  Josh Kelley and I laughed pretty hard.  We thought by chance this might have been this years Christmas candy, but alas with further inspection all the Christmas candy given out had expired in July.  We can’t make this stuff up.

This was Amon’s first year to actually participate in Halloween which made us laugh and want to go crazy because he was kind of a hot mess.  My friend Ashely brought me an entire baseball uniform for him to wear because she’s awesome and knows I could use all the help I can get.  He loved dressing up, he loved going door to door and yet was freezing and on multiple occasions made his way into strangers houses.  This meant Josh or myself issuing lots of apologies and pulling him from strangers homes.  Amon does not know a stranger and in no way honors personal space EVER.

He also got into an intense conversation with an older lady who had a dog.  He lingered far too long at this house and Josh had to go in and get him.  Then there was the house where all the big kids came back, but not Amon.  I finally went up to see what the hold up was and there he sat cowering in full panic behind the home owner who was consoling him and passing out candy to the scary dressed teens on his front porch.  We’ve got several of those #1 Dad and #1 Mom mugs 🙂

And then there was the house where Harper reported back that Amon upon energetically bounding onto the front porch knocked over the home owners table which held the bowl of candy and let’s just all thank God for Harper Kelley because she helped get it all picked up and apologized on his behalf like the responsible first child she is.

So Halloween was a riot.  Too much fun.  Hilariously hilarious and yet when arriving back home Josh and I felt like we’d ran a marathon.  Amon was toast…ready for bed and couldn’t have gotten in it quick enough.

Happy Thursday.

Halloween’s Past

My brain is toast for any normal blog posting today…where I type anything which would make sense.  And the other day I got to thinking back to what all the Kelley kids have been for Halloween in the past.  Then curiosity got the best of me because I couldn’t remember them all and then since I was sifting through all my digital picture love I thought I would just go ahead and share with the inter webs our Halloween past goodness.

2007.  Harper’s only only child Halloween.  Josh always calls her Hair Bear because she had so much hair when she was born.  Easy choice…bear.

2008.  Hudson enters the scene.  Harper was a dinosaur because she was obsessed with dinosaurs and Hudson was a turtle because well, it was funny.  I made both costumes from felt and cheap digs.

2009.  Solomon enters the scene and we found out about Hudson’s peanut allergy so they were peanut butter and jelly…again with the felt and hot glue costumes…and Harper was a butterfly princess…her choice of description.

2010.  Two old guys with mustaches because we were going to our nieces dress up party and had nothing else, so it stuck…and a bumble bee.

I could die from this picture of the boys.  Makes me cackle.

2011.  The year of the cat and Buzz & Zerg.

2012.  Amon enters the scene.  Super heroes are in full on obsession with everyone.  And clearly Amon had to be Superman.

2013.  Star Wars.  We had the perfect making for Obi Wan, Padme, Anakin and an Ewok.

No pictures yet, but this year we’ve got a witch, 2 ninjas and a baseball player.  We’ll be suiting up as soon as they hit the doors from school and getting our trick-or-treat on.  Crossing our fingers the rain will hold off.

Enjoy your weekend and Halloween/Fall fun.

Getting By {Halloween/Fall Edition}

Way busy crazy week.  I wanted to stop in and at least say hi yesterday, but alas, there was zero zero zero time.  From the minute we woke up, we hit the ground running and didn’t stop until 11ish last night.  Between Monday and yesterday I have baked 5 gooey butter cakes, a double batch of these chocolate chip cookies, whoopie pies and what I thought was a double batch of these snickerdoodle cookies, but after further review of the recipe I think lack of sleep got the best of me and I did not double it even though I thought I had…anyways, they are delicious.  And yes, I strayed from my normal family snickerdoodle recipe because when I saw “The Best Snickerdoodles” as the title of the recipe, I just had to try it.  I’m such a sucker for those claims…the best, world’s greatest, etc.  Happy to report they are super yummy.

Sidenote:  Funny story from a few years ago.  The chocolate chip cookie recipe from above is seriously my favorite.  My mom actually has a chocolate chip cookie recipe in our family cookbook, but right after she died I was feeling all mopey and wanted to bake something that was hers.  I went with her famous chocolate chip cookie recipe.  While crying and stirring and throwing a full on pity party for myself, I start adding the chocolate chips and caught a glimpse at the recipe on the back of the chocolate chip bag…same recipe.  My mom had swiped Nestle Toll House’s recipe and all these years I had thought she was the genius behind it.  I had a good laugh about it.  End Sidenote.

Halloween is Friday and it is one of my favorite holidays, but this year we just haven’t done much at all.  I mentioned a few posts back we only had one costume and am happy to report 3 out of 4 Kelley children now have costumes.  We’re getting there, we’re getting there.

Sol’s hands make me laugh so hard.

Hudson said he wanted to be a skeleton and I thought this was going to be his and Sol’s first year not to be a themed thing together…they have just always liked similar things, but when Hudson’s saw how muscley and “I’ll snap your neck silently in a dark alley way” Sol looked, he wanted in on that.

It kind of made me secretly really happy.  Hudson and Solomon have been peanut butter and jelly, two old guy with mustaches, Buzz and Zerg, Batman and Green Lantern and last year Obi Wan and Anakin.  I should really dig all those pictures out for you to see…the best!

I also am in charge of fun Halloween cookies and cupcakes for Harper, Hudson and Solomon’s classes on Friday.  I needed something super quick and then remembered something I had seen on Pinterest a while back…didn’t even pin it, but I really think it was from there…just rolos and candy eyes.  That’s it.  Boom.  Done.  They are seriously the easiest cookie and cupcake toppers ever.  And the kids loved them.

(Joanns has candy eyes all year long.)

And I do really like friends who say “We haven’t done a thing festive for fall or Halloween either…want to come over and carve pumpkins?”  Why yes, yes we do.  So we headed over Saturday night to our friends’ house.  We stuffed our faces with Mexican food, dug out pumpkin guts, carved crazy boy drawn faces with a jig saw…using a jigsaw to carve your pumpkin = genius…and painted our hearts out.  Pretty sure Harper, Ashley and I enjoyed ourselves more painting our pumpkins than anyone else.

Now all I have to do is figure out what Amon will be for Halloween.  I was thinking Michael Jackson or Prince or a purple minion, but now, now my brain is gone and I’m thinking we’ll just let him wear Solomon’s baseball uniform and call it a wrap.  We shall see.

Have a great rest of the day and happy Wednesday.

Halloween {Rainy Kelley Style}

I do, I love Halloween.  It’s kind of my fave.  And it rained all flippin’ day long.  So plans changed and we Kelleys adapted.

Pumpkin carving.  Josh Kelley was in charge.  No one was very interested and he free handed our pumpkin…which I think kind of looks like a pumpkin Garbage Pail Kid…with fangs.

Huddy and Sol had MDO and a fun Halloween party.

I picked up The Croods from Redbox at 9:10am.  Rain, rain and more rain was on the forecast and it did not disappoint.  Now we have tornado warnings.

Amon and I did last minute Africa shopping.  He insisted on me taking jelly bellys to Africa.  Well okay Amon, if you insist.

Harper had her class Halloween party.  Ms. Flowers asked me to make the jello spider petri dishes.  It worked perfectly and most of the kids chowed down.  Jello should really make a new green flavor that isn’t lime though.  It’s funky.

I picked my nephew Coop up from school and he was dressed in his ape costume.  How fun and hilarious is he?  Totally.  Made me happy I am his aunt.

The last of my Africa supplies arrived…solar powered lanterns.  I’ve become BFF with the UPS dude.  Today he asked if I ran a day care.  I was all like, “Nope.  They’re all mine.”

Candy, candy and more candy.  I blew my no-sweets during the week, but it is Halloween.  Come on.

Our Star Wars crew hit up one lonely house.  The Barnes family, who never get trick-or-treaters, got the mother load.  And were happy to see us.  We were excited to get in one official trick-or-treat house.  Then we went home with McDonald’s happy meals.  My pictures are terrible…too dark and too windy and Amon was DUN.

And shortly after everyone was in bed our electricity went out.  And remained out for several hours.  Josh and I weighed bags in the dark, but finally got all my bags to the right weights…maybe.  I’m praying for a compassionate and kind Delta worker who will weigh all my bags with some grace.  I think I’m going to need it.

And there you have it.  Our Halloween in a nut shell.  Hope you guys enjoyed the day…Halloween celebrating or not.

Happy Thursday!

Pumpkello

Harper has had the most amazing teachers so far in her short little school life.  Mrs. Tanner, from last year, will forever be an important part of our Kelley story.  She was such a prominent part of a very tough year for our family and she loved Harper and our family well.  She’s incredible and we all just adore her.  There may have already been a few quarrels over who will get her for kindergarten next year.  Huddy says he will.  Sol says he will.  Do you see the dilemma?

This year Harper has Ms. Flowers…AKA Aunt Susan…AKA Sooooooosan (said in a ghostly manner).  Susan has been loving our family for several years now, so it’s been quite fun for Harper and our whole family to experience her in the roll of teacher.  And what an excellent teacher she is.

Halloween is fast approaching and it’s probably my favorite holiday.  Yes, yes, yes…it’s surprising right…all that loving Jesus and Halloween at the same time 🙂  It’s just so much fun to me and candy is pretty much my kryptonite in the best, most deliciously sugary way in which I completely welcome.

Ms. Flowers has a pumpkin day leading up to Halloween and asked me to get a pumpkin, hollow it out and then fill it with jello.  You can re-read that if you would like.  I’ll give you a second…

So yes, a pumpkin full of jello.  A jello filled pumpkin.  A pumpkello if you will.  Or maybe it should be pumpello.  Or jellkin.  Either way it probably should just be called Straight-Up-Disgusting-Fun.  She then fills it with little items for the kids to dig their little hands through and find.  She even puts in cooked spaghetti.  Did anyone else just gag?  Then they write about the experience.  I’ve decided I would like to re-take 1st grade with Ms. Flowers.

I was a bit nervous about filling the pumpkin, not knowing how much jello I would need.  Susan told me to go with yellow jello because other colors have stained the kids hands and arms in the past.  I bought all the yellow jello the store had and still didn’t think I had enough so I went with some orange too.  I made all the jello at once in two large mixing bowl.  Boiled two pots of water all at once and used my big daddy 4 cup glass measuring cup to knock it all out.  It worked perfectly.  This was a medium to large sized pumpkin…$6 at Kroger.

In the end I made a little over 20 cups of jello.  Josh and the kids hollowed the pumpkin out and then when I was dumping all the jello in, Josh and I just got so tickled with how nasty the whole thing was.  It was quite hilarious.

Then I had to fit this giant jello filled pumpkin in our refrigerator.  I started to put it on the top shelf and realized that was going to be a giant jello disaster waiting to happen because I was positive the weight of the pumpkin was going to break the shelf.  So I removed the stem top and went with the much safer and better idea of the bottom shelf.  Then I enjoyed how funny it was to open the refrigerator and see the smiling jack-o-lantern staring back at me.  Good times.

Seriously, a pumpkin just couldn’t get more fun right?  Susan did say this was not originally her idea, but she’s been teaching for  19 years and doesn’t remember where the idea came from.  So I’m giving her the props 🙂

High-5s or fist bumps for amazing teachers and Halloween love yo.

Happy Friday!
