Last Hurrah!

Tomorrow is the beginning of school.  Oh my goodness.  How can summer be over with already?  How????  I might get a little emotional.  I can kind of feel it.

I remember when a friend of our family asked me a while back if I was going to homeschool.  I gave my confident “nope” answer.  She then went on to say how amazing and brave and all these other wonderful words someone we knew was because she was homeschooling.  My mom was nearby and flashed me the stink eye…like “Watch out lady.  I’ll sucker punch you in the back”.  She knew my heart was racing because a momma who homeschools is all those things, but mommas who send their kiddos off into the big world…whether public school, private, whatever it is…they are also just as amazing and brave and all those wonderful words too.  There shouldn’t be lines drawn in the sand about this.  Whether self educating your children or handing over the reigns to professional teachers & trusting, either one is a choice to be respected.  I stand tall by those words.  Take heart all you mommas, you are doing a dang good job!

So tomorrow I will send three of our kiddos off.  And I am so hopeful for this year.  I have been praying for their hearts and minds…their friendships, their teachers, their school.  I have been praying they would learn, but so much more than academic things.  I want them to learn about people…love, compassion, kindness, generosity, respect.  I want their hearts to see Jesus in the kid sitting next to them at the lunch table.  I want them to see Jesus in the kid who sits lonely on the playground.  I want them to see Jesus in the kid who struggles to make it through the day.  School is about so much more than ABCs and 123s.

I am a bit sad to see them off.  I do love summer and the time we’ve had together.  Today as we packed up to leave the wave pool…maybe our last time for the year…Solomon said, “Mom, this is our last day with you.”  Goh, kid.  Way to bring the mood down.  I assured him we have lots of other time still left together.  This isn’t the end, the end.

We did do a little last hurrah fun.  Last night we ate at Steak n Shake.  I don’t even remember how this came about because we never get to eat there, but some how we all decided on it for our Farewell Summer dinner.  And it was perfecto.  Burgers and shakes all around.

Today we hit up our beloved Wave Pool because that’s just what we do.  Ginormous THANK YOU to my sweet friend Ashley who has put up with us all summer long.  We think you are the bomb!  Harper wants to work there when she “grows up”.

We got Sonic on the way home because again, that’s just what we do.  For a moment I felt a tish bad about our kids totally relating yummy, unhealthy foods to celebratory things, but then I remembered we were getting ice cream and forgot all about my guilt 🙂

And tonight we’re taking baths (pick your jaw up) and having Taco Tuesday (Still.On.A.Tuesday…anyone???) with some yummy homemade dinnerness.  Maybe we’ll rock a board game and everyone will be in bed early.  Tomorrow is a big day.  We’re all super excited.  No one’s raining on our parade.  It’s going to be such a lovely year, I just know it.

Happy Tuesday!

  1. Sounds like y’all are having a blast! I love reading about your sweet family. I wanted to echo your sentiments about sending your kiddos to public school…that’s why we chose public school for ours, as well! (Other school options are good, too; public school is right for us, though!)

  2. i love your blog, i love your thoughts! lump in my throat.

  3. Yay for quoting The Lego Movie! And yay for tacos!
